An AI-powered dating app launched by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has successfully helped 265 couples tie the knot, according to official data released this month. The app, TOKYO Enmusubi, went live in September 2024 with the goal of boosting Japan's persistently low birth rate.

The initiative was prompted by a survey revealing that about 70 percent of marriage-minded individuals were not actively seeking partners. To ensure participants were genuinely interested in marriage, the app implemented strict conditions, including proof of legal single status and an online interview. As of June 30 this year, the app boasted 16,000 registered members, selected from approximately 36,000 applicants. Government data also indicates 760 couples are currently in serious relationships.

One user, identified by the pseudonym "Turtle," shared her experience, calling the app a "last chance" as she approached her 40s. After several unsuccessful blind dates, she met her future husband in late August and they began a serious relationship by mid-September, leading to a proposal by the end of December.

Japan's demographic challenges are stark. The number of babies born to Japanese nationals hit a record low of 671,236 in 2025, marking the tenth consecutive annual decline. Deaths significantly outnumbered births, with 1.6 million recorded. While the fertility rate slightly decreased to 1.14, marriages saw a modest increase, according to the Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry.
