Tokyo Plans Bulletproof Underground Parking Near Station as Missile Shelter

Tokyo is planning to transform an underground parking facility near its central station into a potential shelter for residents and tourists in the event of a ballistic missile attack. The metropolitan government aims to upgrade the Yaesu Parking Lot, a move that underscores growing concerns over regional security.

Governor Yuriko Koike announced that a feasibility study for the upgrade will commence within the current fiscal year, which concludes in March. The proposed enhancements include the installation of blast-proof doors and the establishment of storage areas for emergency supplies. This underground facility, situated between two and 11 meters below ground and spanning approximately 13,000 square meters, would become Tokyo's second such underground emergency shelter.

This initiative follows a series of ballistic missile tests conducted by North Korea into regional waters, including the Sea of Japan. Tokyo views these actions as a significant and unacceptable threat, emphasizing the necessity of protecting its citizens' lives and property. The selection of the Yaesu Parking Lot is strategic, given its proximity to Tokyo Station, a major hub for visitors and a symbolic gateway to the capital.

The plan reflects a proactive approach to civil defense in response to escalating geopolitical tensions. The first underground disaster storage facility was established at the Azabu-Juban subway station.
