Tomás Etcheverry’s US Open dream ends with defeat by Michelsen in the fourth round

Tomás Etcheverry’s best US Open run ended in the round of 16, where American Alex Michelsen beat him 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-4. The Argentine, seeded 32nd, still leaves New York with a reward: he will climb three places on Monday to become the world No. 29.

Etcheverry had never reached the second week of the tournament. His earlier appearances ended in qualifying in 2021, the opening round in 2022, the second round in 2023 and the third round in 2024. He returned to the second round in 2025, but this season finally made his breakthrough in New York.

Michelsen made the first move, breaking in the second game after Etcheverry missed a backhand down the line. The Argentine recovered the break in the fifth game, and neither player surrendered serve again before the opening set reached a tiebreak.

Etcheverry held a set point at 6-5, but Michelsen saved it with a mini-break. The American then won both service points and took the set 8-6 after a long exchange, finishing with a deep forehand and a cross-court winner.

Michelsen broke at the start of the second set and never allowed Etcheverry back into it. He did not face a break point in the set and closed it 6-4. In the third, he broke on his first opportunity in the fifth game to move ahead 3-2. Etcheverry earned two break points when Michelsen served for the match, but the American saved them and sealed the victory with an ace. Michelsen will play on Tuesday for a semifinal place against the winner of Frances Tiafoe’s match with Daniil Medvedev.
