Tommy Time: Saskatchewan Roughriders' one-yard wonder

Tommy Stevens, despite being listed as the third-string quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, has carved out a vital role beyond traditional backup duties. Known as "Tommy Time," he has emerged as one of the team's most dependable assets in short-yardage situations, bringing a unique dynamic to the offense whenever he takes the field.

He’s a tough runner, he’s big, he’s strong, he’s also fast, but he’s a quarterback deep down right, so he can also throw the ball. So there’s always the threat that we can drop back and pass to them, he can run it.

Offensive coordinator Marc Mueller highlighted Stevens' versatility, noting his toughness as a runner, his size and strength, and his ability to still throw the ball. This dual threat means defenses must always account for the possibility of a pass, even when he is primarily used for running plays. Running back A.J. Ouellette described Stevens as a "terrifying creature" when carrying the ball, expressing mock concern that Stevens' effectiveness might lead to him taking over other players' jobs.

Stevens' impact is statistically significant. In 2025, he was nearly perfect in short-yardage scenarios, converting 33 out of 36 attempts (91.7%) and scoring five touchdowns. This season, his role has expanded further; through six games, he has already matched his touchdown total with five rushing scores on 25 carries, accumulating over 100 rushing yards. Head coach Corey Mace praised Stevens' consistent ability to move the chains, while starting quarterback Trevor Harris noted Stevens' surprising speed for his size and the offensive line's enthusiasm for his downhill running style.

Tommy is awesome, I think’s he’s secretly paying players in the locker room to get down to the one-yard line ’cause I’m telling you, I don’t know how this keeps working out for the guy, but we’re incredibly happy to have him.

Stevens himself expressed that he always believed in his capabilities and welcomed the opportunity to play this specialized role. "I thought that I was capable, and didn’t really get these opportunities before," he said. "I know I didn’t get those opportunities elsewhere and it was welcomed here with open arms and it’s kind of part of the plan, so really happy to make the most of it."
