Top 14 roundup: Pau make a flying start, Perpignan earn a valuable point, Montpellier stumble

Pau made the strongest opening statement in the Top 14 multiplex, winning at Montpellier after a polished performance. The Béarn side had to work hard in defence to contain Montpellier’s power, while its forwards fought a major battle and the backs posed a constant attacking threat.

Fly-half Joe Simmonds played a decisive role in the victory. Montpellier, by contrast, endured a deeply disappointing start. Two yellow cards in the opening 10 minutes left the team chasing the game, and it lacked precision near the try line despite fielding a strong squad.

Lyon also allowed a promising match to become unnecessarily difficult. After appearing to be in control against Clermont, the team conceded 26 points to three in the final 17 minutes.
