Topolansky Praises Lacalle Pou's 'Serenity' in Speech, Agrees on 'Challenge with Height' to Parliament

Former Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou made a notable reappearance, reaffirming his significant political leadership, which observers place a step above other national figures. His return to the public stage was highly anticipated by his party's base and generated interest across the political spectrum, as he is seen as a key adversary for the leftist coalition in the lead-up to 2029.

Lacalle Pou's address, however, largely sidestepped direct confrontation with the current government. While some analysts interpreted a subtle message to President Yamandú Orsi regarding the distinction between authority and power – with Lacalle Pou stating, "power cannot be exercised well if one does not have authority first... One cannot govern a country well if one does not know it" – the overall tone was conceptual rather than partisan. He acknowledged the party's militants but avoided pinpointing specific government errors.

President Orsi dismissed any notion of feeling targeted by Lacalle Pou's remarks, stating that it is not appropriate for a president to comment on other leaders' statements. Meanwhile, former Vice President Lucía Topolansky lauded Lacalle Pou's "serenity" and "maturity," noting how these qualities were evident, especially in his call to safeguard the political system. She interpreted his comments about being "older" not as a statement of age, but of growth and deepened understanding, particularly relevant in the current global context, referencing the situation in the United States.

It is very important for any leader to show themselves like this, because serenity, like joy, hatred, or all feelings, is transmitted. At one point he speaks of being older, when he is not. I interpret that what he meant is that he has matured in some things and that was particularly noticeable in two points. In one case, he called to take care of the political system and I thought it was important given everything that is happening in the world, particularly in the United States.
