Toronto bakeries targeted in overnight attacks; officials condemn vandalism and shooting

Toronto police are investigating two separate overnight incidents targeting Jewish-owned bakeries, with one location struck by gunfire and another suffering a smashed window. The Hate Crime Unit and the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force are leading the investigation into the attacks on Kiva's Bagel Bar.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his dismay, stating on X that he was "appalled by the targeting of two Kiva’s Bagel Bar locations." He reaffirmed the Canadian government's "absolute commitment to combating the scourge of antisemitism" and emphasized that "Jewish Canadians should be able to live, work, and worship free from fear, intimidation, and hate."

Similarly, Premier Doug Ford took to X to voice his disgust with the incidents. He also commented on a separate shooting at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto that occurred Monday, though police have confirmed no link between the bakery attacks and the consulate incident. Ford stated his expectation that "all those responsible to be found, prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law."

Investigators have released images of a suspect vehicle believed to be involved in both bakery incidents. No injuries were reported in connection with the vandalism or the gunfire. The incidents occurred on July 27, 2026.
