Driver Charged After Vehicles Clocked at Nearly 200 km/h in Winnipeg Street Race

A high-speed incident involving multiple vehicles racing on Winnipeg's Disraeli Freeway early Sunday morning led to one arrest, according to the Winnipeg Police Service. The police helicopter, AIR1, observed several vehicles, including a Chevrolet Corvette and a Jeep, traveling at speeds approaching 200 kilometers per hour around 2 a.m.

As officers attempted to intercept two of the cars near Lagimodiere Boulevard and Regent Avenue, the Jeep pulled over and received tickets. However, the Corvette sped away. The helicopter continued to track the Corvette until it crossed the Narin Overpass, with speeds still recorded as high as 200 km/h.

The chase concluded on Johnson Avenue, where the Corvette eventually stopped. The driver and a passenger fled on foot but were apprehended by the police K9 unit nearby. One of the suspects required medical attention after being apprehended by a police dog. A 20-year-old man has been charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance and flight while pursued by a peace officer and was released on a notice to appear. Police have not identified the other vehicles involved or stated if charges were laid against the second person arrested.
