Torres municipality clears roadside vegetation on Pan-American Highway ahead of deadline

Municipal crews from the Torres Municipality undertook roadside clearing work on the Pan-American Highway in the La Pastora sector on Tuesday, August 25.

This effort comes just two days before a deadline set by local residents for the Lara State Governorate to begin formal repaving work. The community had previously protested on August 18, blocking the highway for over seven hours until the governorate committed to sending heavy machinery.

However, the municipal clearing has been met with distrust by drivers and residents. While the vegetation removal improves visibility, the road surface itself remains severely damaged along the 50-kilometer stretch connecting Lara and Trujillo states. Potholes and cracks continue to pose a risk to travelers.

Agricultural producers, transporters, and residents of La Pastora view the municipality's action as a cosmetic and insufficient measure. They are concerned that this preliminary maintenance might be all that is done if the governorate fails to deliver on its promise of asphalt paving. The central question remains whether this work precedes the arrival of regional heavy equipment or if the official promise will amount to little more than cutting grass.

As of Tuesday afternoon, regional authorities had not commented on whether the promised machinery would arrive by the August 27 deadline, as agreed upon with community representatives.
