TotalEnergies Discussing Exit from Russian LNG Project

French energy firm TotalEnergies is nearing a potential exit from Russia's Arctic 2 liquefied natural gas project, signaling a significant shift in its operations amidst ongoing international sanctions. The company is in discussions to transfer its 10 percent stake to NordLine, a subsidiary of the project's majority shareholder, Novatek. This move is a direct response to the challenges posed by U.S. sanctions, which have complicated trade and operations for Western companies in Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne confirmed the discussions, stating that presidential authorization for the deal was received last month. The transfer is expected to be completed soon. While this disposal would reduce TotalEnergies's direct involvement in the Arctic 2 project, the company will retain other significant interests in Russia. These include a stake in another Arctic LNG field and shares in Novatek itself, indicating a continued, albeit reduced, presence in the Russian energy sector.

The financial implications of this divestment are substantial. TotalEnergies already wrote down the value of its Arctic 2 stake by $4.1 billion in 2022. The company has a long-standing partnership with Novatek, dating back to 1994, and they jointly operate the massive Yamal natural gas field in Siberia, a key supplier of LNG to Europe. This complex web of investments highlights the intricate balance TotalEnergies is navigating between international sanctions and its historical energy commitments in Russia.
