Tour de France: Can Paul Seixas Overtake Isaac del Toro for Third Place?

Paul Seixas faces a significant challenge to secure third place in the Tour de France, trailing Isaac del Toro by 24 seconds heading into the final alpine stage. The gap, though seemingly small in the context of a three-week race, appears difficult to close, especially after Seixas showed limitations on the Alpe d'Huez climb.

Seixas admitted to having one of the hardest days of his life on the bike during the 19th stage. "I limited the damage. In the end, I didn't have the legs I was hoping for," he stated, his disappointment evident. He was unable to respond to accelerations from top riders like Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel, and never appeared capable of launching a decisive attack to destabilize del Toro.

Despite the setback, Seixas has maintained a remarkably consistent performance throughout the Tour. He has achieved ten top-10 finishes and has not had a single bad day, demonstrating a controlled and risk-averse approach to the race. This is particularly noteworthy as it is his first race longer than eight days. However, del Toro, who is also a Tour de France debutant, has the advantage of having completed a Grand Tour previously and possesses a better understanding of sustained effort over long distances. While del Toro has occasionally appeared to struggle, he has consistently found the resources to recover, placing him slightly ahead of Seixas this year.
