Tour de France Femmes: Pauline Ferrand-Prévot falters on fifth stage won by Demi Vollering

Demi Vollering claimed victory in the fifth stage of the Tour de France Femmes, a performance that likely ended Pauline Ferrand-Prévot's hopes of winning the overall yellow jersey.

Ferrand-Prévot, the defending champion, struggled on the hilly fifth stage, losing contact with her main rivals on an ascent with 30 kilometers remaining. She was unable to match the pace set by Vollering, whose acceleration proved decisive on the Col de Durbize. Ferrand-Prévot finished the stage 2 minutes and 35 seconds behind the leaders, and now trails overall leader Marlen Reusser by 5 minutes.

"You have to face facts, it's irretrievable," Ferrand-Prévot stated after the stage, attempting to maintain a positive demeanor despite the setback. "I gave everything, but I couldn't do better, so I can't be disappointed." She admitted that while she performed at her level, her competitors were simply stronger on the day.

With Ferrand-Prévot out of contention for the general classification, the fight for the yellow jersey is expected to be a three-way battle between Marlen Reusser, Demi Vollering, and Katarzyna Niewadoma. Vollering, who secured her fourth Tour de France Femmes stage win, is now considered the strong favorite to win the overall title.
