Tourism in Baden-Württemberg Stagnates Amid Consumer Hesitancy

Stuttgart, Germany – The tourism sector in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg is experiencing a period of stagnation. In the first half of 2026, the region's accommodation establishments recorded nearly 11 million guest arrivals, a marginal increase of 0.1% compared to the same period last year.

However, the number of overnight stays saw a decline of 1.3%, falling to 26.3 million. Christine Schönhuber, the managing director of Tourism Marketing GmbH Baden-Württemberg (TMBW), acknowledged the slight growth in arrivals but expressed concern over the decrease in overnight stays. She noted that the sector is feeling the effects of a general consumer reluctance to spend, despite the enduring desire for travel.

"We are currently feeling a certain consumer restraint in tourism as well," Schönhuber stated. "Nevertheless, the desire to travel remains strong overall. Holidays continue to be a high priority."

Data from the State Statistical Office reveals that domestic travelers continue to dominate the market. In the first six months of the year, 79% of guests originated from within Germany, while 21% were international visitors. This trend was even more pronounced in overnight stays, with domestic guests accounting for 81.2%, largely because they tend to stay longer on average than international tourists.

Schönhuber suggested that the prolonged summer weather likely helped stabilize demand during the peak season, mitigating further potential declines. Despite the current challenges, the overall sentiment indicates that travel remains a significant priority for many.
