Toxic cloud poisons 17 at Spanish pool; four in serious condition

A chemical reaction at a public swimming pool in La Bisbal del Penedès, Catalonia, Spain, released a toxic cloud, poisoning 17 people. Four of the victims are in serious condition, requiring hospitalization. The incident occurred on Friday, July 10, 2026, in the Tarragona province.

The accident resulted from the mixing of chemicals used for pool maintenance. Emergency services, including six fire trucks and seven ambulances, responded promptly. The Catalan Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to manage the situation.

Following the release of the toxic gas, municipal authorities urged residents to remain in their homes, keep doors and windows closed, and avoid unnecessary travel. Those experiencing symptoms such as throat or nasal irritation, breathing difficulties, dizziness, or nausea were advised to contact emergency services immediately.

Initially, a mass notification system was considered, but it was deemed unnecessary as the toxic cloud's impact was confined to the pool area. The incident is believed to have been caused by an incorrect handling of chemicals during maintenance. The company responsible for the upkeep allegedly added chlorine to the wrong tank, triggering the dangerous reaction.

La Bisbal del Penedès mayor Agnes Ferré reassured the public, noting that chlorine dissipates within hours. She emphasized that the containment measures were precautionary. The municipal pool remains closed pending further safety checks.
