"Toy Story 5" fails to outsell "Super Mario Galaxy" in Mexican box office over first two days

"Toy Story 5" has not matched the box office success of "Super Mario Galaxy" in Mexico during their respective first two days in theaters. The animated film sold 1.4 million tickets, while the Nintendo-based movie sold over 2 million.

Both films opened on a Wednesday, aiming to capitalize on a longer opening weekend. However, "Toy Story 5's" performance is considered less surprising given the current global football fever, especially with the Mexican national team's recent match. Industry leaders had anticipated a drop in overall box office attendance during these games.

Mauricio Durán, president of the National Cinematographic Industry Chamber, had previously stated that Mexico's World Cup matches significantly affect the industry. He predicted a decline during the team's first-round matches, but expected it to be temporary.

If the current trend continues, "Toy Story 5" is expected to reach approximately 4 million tickets sold by Monday. This figure would still surpass the initial five-day box office performance of other anticipated 2026 films, such as "The Devil Wears Prada 2" (2.4 million tickets) and "Michel" (2 million tickets).

The plot of "Toy Story 5" centers on new technological threats, with an iPad capturing young Bonnie's attention and pausing her playtime with the toys. Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie embark on an adventure to regain control.
