Toyota Corolla Cross redesign expected to incorporate concept elements, boost fuel economy

Toyota's popular Corolla Cross, which debuted in 2020, is reportedly gearing up for a significant overhaul, with a new generation anticipated around 2028. Drawing inspiration from the development process of the latest Corolla series, the updated Cross is expected to heavily feature design elements from its concept car predecessor, according to foreign media.

Renderings based on these concept elements suggest a continued sporty silhouette for the crossover. The front may adopt similar lighting designs to the Corolla concept, potentially with vertical air intakes and a continuous LED light bar. A borderless, mesh grille is also anticipated, maintaining the vehicle's crossover styling. At the rear, horizontally oriented, slender taillights are expected.

Japanese media speculates that the new Corolla Cross will see a modest increase in length and height, by approximately 10mm, while the wheelbase remains unchanged. Inside, the cabin is projected to be modernized with a larger central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch full-color digital instrument cluster. Enhanced connectivity features like wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and wireless charging are also expected, possibly integrated with Toyota's new Arene OS.

A key development will be Toyota's new 1.5-liter engine, engineered for the electrified era. This unit promises higher thermal efficiency, improved responsiveness, and reduced fuel consumption. It will be paired with hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains under the "Electric-Rich & Ever More Efficient" philosophy. The engine itself is reportedly 10% smaller and lighter than the current 1.5-liter, offering smoother power delivery. The hybrid system aims for a 10-15% improvement in average fuel economy, while the PHEV version could achieve over 90 kilometers of electric-only range.
