Toyota promises New Hilux remains 'tough', introduces BEV version

PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) has unveiled the ninth-generation New Hilux, emphasizing that its development goes beyond mere design refreshes or performance upgrades. The company focused on addressing the real-world needs of customers across various business sectors in Indonesia, drawing directly from user feedback. Toyota has implemented refinements in four primary aspects to ensure the pickup truck remains relevant for both business and personal use.

Bansar Maduma, Marketing Director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor, highlighted Hilux's long-standing role as an operational vehicle in Indonesia, serving sectors from mining in Southeast Sulawesi and East Kalimantan to manufacturing, construction, logistics, and other business activities. It's also a popular choice for personal outdoor adventures. This widespread trust has enabled the Hilux to capture approximately 70 percent of the 4x4 pickup segment market share in Indonesia.

"The evolution of Hilux is not just about delivering better specifications. We observe how customers use the Hilux, the challenges they face, and what they truly need," Bansar stated at the GIIAS 2026 exhibition. These customer insights have translated into four key improvements: New Tough and Modern Design, New Powerful Engine Performance, New Comfort and Convenient Features, and New Reliable Safety and Peace of Mind. These enhancements aim to provide a superior driving experience without compromising the Hilux's renowned tough, "badak" (rhino-like) character, capable of handling any terrain.

The design incorporates a cyber sumo-inspired concept, presenting a robust yet agile appearance. Updates include a more assertive front grille, sleeker LED headlights, a prominent Toyota emblem, and an impressive ground clearance of 312 millimeters. The vehicle is equipped with 18-inch wheels on the V type and 17-inch wheels on the G and A types. Inside, the cabin features a new, more modern, and functional cockpit design. Performance has also been boosted with the 1GD 2.800cc diesel engine, delivering up to 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque with an automatic transmission, or 430 Nm with a manual transmission. This engine is paired with a 4WD system and a Rear Differential Lock to enhance traction when carrying loads or navigating difficult terrain. Bansar stressed that these upgrades are not just about achieving higher performance figures but about instilling greater confidence in the driver when facing diverse road conditions.
