Toyota to build new electric Hilux in Argentina

Toyota is set to begin a new industrial phase in Argentina by producing the next generation of its Hilux pickup, with a significant first for the country: a fully electric version. The Zárate plant, already a major hub for regional production and export, will incorporate this battery-electric model, known as the Hilux BEV, alongside diesel and hybrid variants.

This electric Hilux is part of Toyota's global strategy to offer diverse propulsion technologies tailored to different markets. However, the electric version's initial rollout in Argentina will focus on industrial sectors, particularly mining. This is due to the operational advantages for electric vehicles in these fields, such as predictable routes, regular charging opportunities at base facilities, and suitability for areas with limited public charging infrastructure.

In contrast, the hybrid version is expected to have a broader sales target for the general market. The decision to prioritize industrial applications for the electric model mirrors Toyota's approach in other countries, such as Australia, where mining, construction, and energy companies have been early adopters of the Hilux BEV.

While the electric Hilux has already reached Latin America from Thailand, with Bolivia and Chile being the first markets, its local production in Argentina signifies a major step. The specific timing for announcing the electric and hybrid versions remains to be seen, but the focus on industrial use cases suggests a strategic, phased introduction to the Argentine market.
