TPP chairman announces debate on caning, discusses referendum talks

Taiwan People's Party Chairman Huang Kuo-chang announced that eight TPP legislators will participate in a four-on-four debate on the issue of caning. The debate is scheduled for Tuesday evening on the program "Voice of the People."

Huang stated that the TPP is maintaining good communication with the Kuomintang (KMT) regarding referendum proposals. He assured that further details would be shared once a final decision is reached. The announcement came during the unveiling ceremony for the legislator Chen Ching-lung's mountain service office and the TPP's Hakka Development Committee mountain service office.

Addressing media inquiries about referendums, Huang reiterated his call for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to uphold its past commitment to direct democracy. He criticized the DPP for what he described as a shift in stance after gaining power, accusing them of forgetting that the people are the ultimate sovereign. Huang recalled that the DPP had previously supported the "birdcage referendum law" and that it was only through the opposition's collective effort last year that the right to link referendums with general elections was restored to the people.
