Traffic Accidents Claim 1,881 Lives in Peru in 2026; Speeding is Main Cause

Peru has recorded a grim toll of 1,881 traffic fatalities in 2026, with excessive speed identified as the leading cause, according to General Humberto Alvarado, director of Traffic, Transport, and Road Safety of the National Police.

Of the total deaths, 309 occurred on national highways. Alvarado highlighted that speeding intensifies during long holiday weekends due to increased vehicle flow. Other contributing factors include driving under the influence of alcohol, disregarding speed limits, and dangerous overtaking maneuvers, especially on curves with reduced visibility.

In response, the National Police announced the deployment of 500 specialized vehicles and personnel for the "Safe Travel Fiestas Patrias 2026" operation. This initiative aims to prevent accidents, provide assistance to travelers, and enhance security during the national independence celebrations.

Authorities are also implementing preventive measures for drivers and passengers. Congestion on the Carretera Central, particularly in Matucana, was noted, with police working to ease traffic flow. The National Police are coordinating with Sutran to potentially restrict heavy vehicle traffic during early morning hours to improve circulation and reduce accident risks on heavily congested routes.
