Traffic Gridlock Grips Athens Amid Widespread Delays

Drivers in Athens faced a challenging start to Thursday morning as the city grappled with significant traffic congestion across several major thoroughfares.

The Kifissos highway emerged as the epicenter of the traffic chaos, experiencing extremely slow speeds in both directions. The stretch between Peristeri and Nea Ionia was especially impacted, leading to substantial delays for commuters.

Traffic also proved difficult on Athens Avenue, particularly between Chaidari and the refineries. Similar issues of intermittent delays and slow-moving vehicles were observed on Kifisias and Mesogeion avenues, as well as on Kareas Avenue from Ilioupoli to the junction with Alimou-Katechaki Avenue.

The city center was not spared, with increased traffic noted on King Constantine and Queen Sophia avenues, as well as on Ardittou Street. The road network around the port of Piraeus also began to experience growing congestion.

Attiki Odos, the city's ring road, also reported delays. The northbound carriageway experienced 5 to 10-minute delays between the Metamorfosi and Heraklion junctions, and on the exit towards Lamia. Similar delays of 5 to 10 minutes were recorded on the southbound carriageway, including the exit towards Lamia. Authorities are urging drivers to be patient and to plan their travel times accordingly, as further intensification of traffic is anticipated in the coming hours.
