Tragedy in China: 21 dead in landslide, rescue efforts continue

A devastating landslide in a northwestern Chinese province has claimed the lives of 21 people, according to state media reports on Wednesday. The disaster struck a village in Dangchang county early Tuesday morning, burying 33 individuals. Rescue teams have been deployed to the scene in large numbers as they continue to search for those still missing.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that the search and rescue operations at the landslide site in Dangchang county have concluded, confirming 21 fatalities. Local authorities provided the grim update. In response to the tragedy, the government has allocated 30 million yuan (approximately 3.9 million euros) in emergency aid to support reconstruction efforts in the affected area.

Landslides are a recurring natural hazard in China, especially during the summer season when intense rainfall is common in many regions. This latest incident occurred amidst severe storms and torrential downpours that have been battering southern and central China, resulting in approximately 17 deaths and hundreds of injuries in other areas. Tens of thousands have been evacuated in the southern Guangxi region due to overflowing rivers and streams.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a "total" mobilization of rescue efforts. The Ministry of Water Resources warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue affecting parts of the coastal Guangxi province and the southwestern Guangdong province, a major industrial hub. Minister Li Guoying highlighted that the safety of reservoirs and dams in the affected zones is being severely tested.
