The incident took place on Sunday as the woman was participating in a hike with a larger group in the Grutas do Sol area. According to Brazilian media reports, she stepped onto a short trail near an observation point and lost her balance while reaching to apply insect repellent, subsequently falling off the cliff.

Maximino mentioned the difficulty in contacting her family, stating, "Only around 2 a.m. were we able to contact her children and inform them of the sad news. Until then, we had no contact with family members."

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the cliff fall in Maricá.
