Train Derailment Causes Spill of 60,000 Liters of Chemical in Mexico's Sonora State

A cargo train operated by Grupo México Transportes derailed in the municipality of Naco, northern Sonora, Mexico, resulting in the spill of approximately 60,000 liters of sodium hydrosulfide. The incident occurred near the Potrero El Cobre ranch in the ejido Cuauhtémoc, where several train cars went off the tracks.

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) reported that no injuries occurred and, preliminarily, the spill does not pose an immediate risk to the nearby population. However, the agency has initiated inspection, surveillance, and environmental assessment actions to determine the full extent of the environmental impact and verify the company's response measures.

State Civil Protection Coordination personnel were dispatched to the scene, joining emergency services and company representatives. The National Water Commission (Conagua) has begun monitoring and collecting samples of water and soil to identify potential environmental impacts and assess the contamination's scope. Profepa is continuing its diligence to ascertain the magnitude of the environmental damage and define necessary remediation actions. The cause of the derailment and the precise number of affected units were not immediately detailed.
