Train from Belgrade takes nearly eight hours to reach Sremska Mitrovica as passengers wait for hours without information

A train from Belgrade Centar took nearly eight hours to reach Sremska Mitrovica after losing power on the line, leaving passengers stranded for hours, sometimes in darkness, without clear information about what was happening.

The train was scheduled to depart at 4:36 p.m. on Saturday but left about 50 minutes late. Around 6 p.m., it lost electrical power between Golubinci and Stara Pazova, beginning a long wait for passengers who said they received repeated assurances that another train would arrive or that the problem would soon be resolved.

A passenger told N1 that a replacement train eventually appeared shortly before midnight, but it too broke down and stopped. The train reached Golubinci around midnight, where another train had been waiting for three hours before the journey continued. Passengers arrived in Sremska Mitrovica at about 1 a.m.

What is additionally worrying is that no one responsible clearly explained either the train’s initial delay or what was actually happening after the power failure.

The passenger said the situation became tense and that some people broke windows and jumped from the train to get out. She said passengers had been trapped for hours without clear information about evacuation or when travel would resume, and called for accountability and concrete information during such incidents.

N1 sent Srbijavoz questions about the failure, the lengthy delay and procedures for informing passengers. The route normally has six daily trains. The scheduled 4:32 p.m. service should reach Sremska Mitrovica at 6:04 p.m., while the final train leaves Belgrade at 7:45 p.m. and arrives at 9:09 p.m.
