Train traffic to Knokke briefly halted after fatal accident in Zeebrugge

Train services between the Belgian coastal towns of Zeebrugge and Knokke experienced significant disruptions on Saturday after a fatal accident occurred in the port of Zeebrugge. The incident led to a temporary suspension of rail traffic, impacting numerous travelers.

Early Saturday morning, a person was fatally struck by a passing train at a railway crossing on Alfred Ronsestraat in Zeebrugge. "A person ended up under a passing train. The person hit unfortunately died," confirmed An Berger, spokesperson for the Federal Police. The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation by authorities.

The disruption affected approximately 25 passengers who were on the train at the time of the incident. They were able to board a replacement bus service around 9 a.m. Additionally, train services between Bruges and Knokke were also replaced by buses to maintain some level of transport for affected passengers.

Normal train operations were eventually restored around 2 p.m. on Saturday, after the necessary investigations and procedures at the accident site were completed. The event underscores the potential dangers at railway crossings and the significant impact such incidents can have on public transportation networks.
