Transfer of Detainees to Coiba Island is National Security Matter, Assures Minister Abrego

Panama's Minister of Security, Fran Abrego, has classified the transfer of detainees to Coiba Island as a matter of national security. Speaking in Veraguas, Abrego asserted that all human rights are being upheld during the process. He noted that some inmates have already utilized video conferencing to communicate with their lawyers.

The minister addressed a brief hunger strike, stating it lasted only about a day. He explained that the detainees resumed eating because the state provides their meals, ending the practice of family members delivering food to the prison gates. This move is part of a broader security policy that includes enhanced prison control and transfers to Coiba.

Regarding anti-narcotics efforts, Abrego reported significant success in the first half of the year, with approximately 54 tons of drugs seized. These operations involved coastal and land patrols, as well as container inspections at ports in collaboration with Customs authorities. Abrego met with local authorities in Veraguas to share crime statistics and coordinate efforts to combat criminal activity in the province. The declarations highlight a security strategy combining penitentiary control with drug interdiction, while public debate continues regarding fundamental rights under the new prison regime.
