Transfers: Awoniyi seals Coventry move, links up with Onyeka

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has completed a permanent move to Coventry City, joining from Nottingham Forest in a deal reportedly worth around £9 million. The transfer marks the end of the 29-year-old's four-year spell at Forest and sees him reunite with his Nigerian teammate Frank Onyeka, who is already part of the Coventry squad.

Coventry City confirmed the transfer, highlighting Awoniyi's extensive Premier League experience. During his time at Nottingham Forest, Awoniyi scored 21 league goals in 90 appearances and a total of 23 goals in 103 matches across all competitions. His career began at Liverpool, followed by loan spells at various European clubs, including FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron, and KAA Gent.

Awoniyi later moved to the Bundesliga, initially on loan at Mainz 05 before joining Union Berlin permanently. He enjoyed his most prolific season in 2021-22 with Union Berlin, scoring 20 goals, which attracted Nottingham Forest to sign him for a club-record fee in 2022. He helped Forest avoid relegation in their first Premier League season back and reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
