Transylvania Highway Section Nears Completion, Contractor Ahead of Schedule

Work on the Chiribiș – Biharia section of the Transylvania Highway (A3) is progressing rapidly, with 65% of the construction now complete, according to the National Company for Road Infrastructure Management (CNIR). The contractor is ahead of the established schedule, demonstrating a strong pace despite ongoing market difficulties.

Gabriel Budescu, the general director of CNIR, visited the construction site in Bihor County and confirmed that the project is proceeding according to contractual terms. He noted the absence of issues related to payments or work modifications. "Contractually, things are proceeding according to schedule. We have no problems regarding change orders, work variations, payment situations, or settlements, all of which are up to date," Budescu stated.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by the market, including difficulties in bitumen supply and increased fuel costs. However, he praised the contractor's performance, noting they are ahead of schedule. "The contractor is ahead of schedule, despite existing market difficulties regarding bitumen supply and fuel cost evolution. We want this pace to be maintained and to be able to complete the works by the end of the year, but, more than respecting deadlines, quality matters to us," Budescu added.

The project involves a significant workforce and equipment, with over 650 workers and 525 pieces of machinery mobilized. To date, the first layer of asphalt has been laid on 11 kilometers of the highway. The next phase includes laying the second asphalt layer on 5 kilometers and an additional 5 kilometers related to the relocation of DN 19E. Guardrails have also been installed along 4.5 kilometers.

The Chiribiș – Biharia lot, spanning 28.55 kilometers, is a crucial part of the Transylvania Highway, designed to connect Hungary's border with the Suplacu de Barcău – Chiribiș section currently under construction. The contract, valued at approximately 785 million lei, was signed in April 2024 with the consortium Precon Transilvania – Citadina 98. Currently, traffic in Bihor County utilizes the 5.35-kilometer section between Biharia and Borș II, which links to Hungary's M4 highway. The completion of the Chiribiș – Biharia and Suplacu de Barcău – Chiribiș lots is essential for ensuring traffic continuity on the Transylvania Highway.
