Trial begins for educator's femicide in Veraguas

The trial for the femicide of educator Doris Franco, who was murdered on April 26, 2024, commenced Tuesday in Santiago de Veraguas. The court is set to hear documentary, testimonial, and expert evidence, with the proceedings anticipated to extend over several days.

Family members and friends of Franco gathered at the courthouse to support the start of the trial, reiterating their call for an exemplary conviction. "The important thing is that this trial has begun. We expect a guilty verdict and that justice will be served for the family," stated individuals close to the victim.

The Ministry of Women, represented by lawyer Rita Castañeda, is accompanying the family and emphasized its dedication to fighting gender-based violence. "We must not normalize violence. There are signs that can indicate a person is aggressive, and we must seek help in time," Castañeda said, reminding the public about the Ministry's Line 180 for violence cases and its mobile app for immediate support.

Fulvia Sinfúl, president of the Action Committee of Veraguas province, noted that the family has waited over two years for this stage of the process. "Delayed justice is not justice. What we ask for today is exemplary justice for Doris, for her daughter, her mother, and her entire family," she stated. Sinfúl also questioned potential access restrictions to the trial, demanding that citizens be allowed to witness the proceedings.

Family members have also denounced that the repeated delays have led to revictimization, forcing them to attend numerous hearings over the past two years.
