Trial Begins for Man Accused of Murder by Arson After Drinking Session

The trial for a man accused of murder, stemming from a fatal incident during a drinking session, commenced with the reading of the indictment and the initiation of evidence examination. The accused, Kęstutis E., faces charges related to an event in September of the previous year in the village of Bubiai, Šiauliai district.

According to the case details, a personal conflict erupted among individuals during a gathering. Kęstutis E., allegedly intoxicated, is accused of intentionally striking a container of highly flammable liquid – a mixture of gasoline and oil – causing it to spill onto the victim, who had fallen. Subsequently, his alleged accomplice, Jurgita S., is accused of igniting the victim's clothing while he lay on the ground, knowing it was soaked in the flammable substance.

Neither defendant attempted to extinguish the flames, leaving the victim to suffer severe burns. The victim died in Šiauliai Hospital the day after the incident, having sustained approximately 60 percent third-degree burns. Jurgita S. admitted partial guilt, while Kęstutis E. denied all charges. Both have agreed to testify, with their interrogations scheduled for the next court session on September 4. The victims' families have filed a civil claim for 120,000 euros in non-pecuniary damages. Both defendants are currently at liberty, with the court expected to rule on the prosecution's request for continued intensive supervision, including electronic monitoring, for six months.
