Tropical Storm Boris claims one life, devastates Oaxaca with floods and landslides

Tropical Storm Boris has left a trail of destruction across Oaxaca, Mexico, resulting in one confirmed fatality and significant damage to infrastructure and businesses. The storm's impact was felt across the Costa, Istmo de Tehuantepec, and Cuenca del Papaloapan regions.

Key infrastructure suffered severe damage, with federal highways experiencing landslides, collapses, and sinkholes. Businesses located on popular tourist beaches were also hit hard. In Salina Cruz, a recently inaugurated open-air theater, built at a cost of 54 million pesos, was destroyed by the storm's heavy rains and strong waves. Homes in the Colonia Cuauhtémoc agency were also inundated.

The storm made landfall between the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca early on June 9. Tragically, one person was found dead after being swept away with their vehicle by a swollen river in San Luis Amatlán. Road disruptions were reported on federal highways 190 and 175, as well as on federal highway 200. Minor navigation was also suspended, and a small sinkhole appeared on a state highway, with concerns that further landslides could worsen the damage.
