Troubling death, contradictory statements: Mother arrested after son, 2, dies in Gard

A two-year-old boy was discovered dead in his mother's home in La Grand-Combe, Gard, France, on Saturday evening. Emergency services arriving at the scene described the situation as "troubling." The child's mother, aged 20, was subsequently arrested and placed in police custody.

Prosecutors stated that the mother's account of events did not align with the medical observations made by a doctor. These discrepancies included the estimated time of death and the presence of bruises on the child's body. Consequently, an investigation into murder of a minor under 15 years old has been initiated.

The young woman, who is separated from the child's father, also has three-year-old twins. These children were not at the residence when emergency services arrived and were located with their father. Authorities plan to verify his whereabouts at the time of the incident.

An autopsy of the two-year-old boy is scheduled for Monday morning at the Nîmes forensic institute to determine the exact cause of death.
