Trujillo: Fake police officers release mining businessman near cemetery

Mining businessman Jenss Marty Lara Tantaquilla was abandoned near a water-treatment plant in Huanchaco, in Peru's La Libertad region, almost 30 hours after his kidnapping.

The armed abductors wore uniforms resembling those used by the police's Grecco unit. They released Lara near the El Cortijo treatment plant, opposite the Padre Eterno cemetery, after negotiating with his family. The businessman, who is linked to gold extraction in Pataz province, was found by relatives after the kidnappers demanded $5 million for his freedom.

The kidnapping began in the early hours of August 30. Lara's girlfriend, a friend and two security agents were killed during the incident. Police later arrested Frank Junior Quezada Cruz, Julio Zavaleta Quezada, César Iván García Rivera, Ángel Fabricio Bocanegra Linares and José Miguel Cerrepe Dávila, who was detained in Chepén.

The main objective at a scene is to preserve the original conditions of the place. Every piece of evidence must remain in its position, protected from contaminants and properly documented from the moment the experts arrive.

Investigators said they located a Suzuki vehicle on September 2 at a property in Trujillo's Torres Araujo development. They said the vehicle had been used in the kidnapping and arrested Juan Manuel Bocanegra Enríquez and Roy Stiven Bocanegra Marreros under provisions covering people caught in the act. Roy Peter Bocanegra Aguilar was arrested the following day in Parcoy, Pataz. Police said he allegedly acted as a logistics operative and transported weapons and uniforms from Pataz to Trujillo.

A criminalistics expert stressed the importance of preserving the scene, including the position of objects, fingerprints, biological traces and camera records. The investigation has also drawn attention to the handling of evidence in kidnapping cases.

Under the conditions of being caught in the act, Juan Manuel Bocanegra Enríquez and Roy Stiven Bocanegra Marreros were detained.
