Trump Administration's Ban on AI Firm Anthropic Ruled Illegal

A federal judge has declared illegal the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, ruling that the government punished the firm for publicly criticizing the Pentagon. U.S. District Judge Rita Lin stated in a 59-page decision that the administration's actions were not justified by national security concerns.

"The hollow invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish those who criticize the government," Judge Lin wrote. The ruling, which makes permanent a temporary suspension of the sanctions ordered in March, prohibits federal agencies from enforcing former President Donald Trump's directive to cease using Anthropic's tools. The judge also overturned the Defense Secretary's designation of Anthropic as a "supply chain risk," a status previously reserved for foreign entities.

The conflict arose after Anthropic refused to allow the military to use its chatbot, Claude, for lethal autonomous weapons or mass surveillance of Americans. Trump had previously denounced Anthropic as a "radical left" company that was "out of control." However, Judge Lin found that the sanctions were intended to "make an example" of the company, which the government deemed "arrogant," rather than to address a real threat.

While Anthropic achieved a significant legal victory, it is not entirely free from restrictions. A separate Pentagon sanction, based on public procurement code, remains in effect pending a judicial review in Washington. This means Anthropic is currently excluded from military contracts, and the Pentagon retains the freedom to select other AI providers. The government has the option to appeal Judge Lin's decision.
