Trump administration threatens to demolish Kennedy Center if $250m renovation not done

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts faces demolition if it does not receive a $250 million renovation, according to a court filing by lawyers for the Trump administration. The warning suggests the national arts complex in Washington D.C. could be "required to be taken down" if repairs are not completed.

Lawyers argued that without the renovation, the center "will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure." They proposed that the site could then be used for an outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River, a long-discussed idea. This marks the first time the prospect of demolishing the Kennedy Center has been raised as an alternative to a two-year closure for improvements.

The threat emerges as part of a broader conflict over President Trump's efforts to rename the memorial dedicated to the 35th U.S. president. A federal judge previously ruled in May that only Congress has the authority to change the center's name. Despite this, the center's board, now largely appointed by Trump, voted 20-3 on August 13th to alter signage. The proposed changes would read "The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President Donald J Trump," and the grounds would be named "President Donald J Trump Plaza."

The administration contends the new signage proposal does not violate the court's injunction, as the building would still formally be called the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The added phrase "Restored and Renovated by" would simply acknowledge Trump's involvement. Ticket sales and fundraising efforts have reportedly collapsed since the initial attempt to add Trump's name to the building.

Without those efforts, the ⁠Center will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down, with a determination to follow on what to ​build on the site, such as a large outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the Potomac River that has been proposed, by some, for many years.
