Trump announces up to 100% tariffs on imported drones, citing national security

President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs of up to 100% on imported drones and their components, citing national security concerns. This decision targets a market heavily dominated by China.

The White House stated that the tariffs are intended to "foster production" of drones within the United States and "reduce dependence" on foreign suppliers. A 100% tariff will apply to unmanned aircraft systems weighing over 25 kilograms, those equipped with thermal cameras, and drone docking stations, among other components. Smaller drones will face a 25% tariff.

Chinese company DJI, founded in 2006, has captured over two-thirds of the global drone market in recent years, according to various studies. These new tariffs are largely expected to take effect on September 3.

The move signals a broader effort by the Trump administration to protect and promote American industries by imposing trade barriers on foreign goods deemed to pose a security risk or hinder domestic growth.
