Trump Backs FIFA President Infantino, Calling Replacement a 'Terrible Mistake'

U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that FIFA would make a "terrible mistake" if it were to replace its current president, Gianni Infantino. Trump voiced his strong support for Infantino, who has faced criticism following a failed plan to open the institution to private investors.

Infantino, currently the sole declared candidate for the upcoming March elections, is seeking a new four-year term. His leadership has come under scrutiny since the disclosure of his controversial private investment project, which was ultimately abandoned. Trump, however, lauded Infantino's tenure, stating in a post on his Truth Social network that the FIFA president is "formidable" and presided over the "most successful World Cup."

Despite Trump's endorsement, football confederations from Europe (UEFA), North, Central America, and the Caribbean (Concacaf), and Asia (AFC) have actively sought to remove Infantino. These confederations have criticized his leadership and his abandoned plan, urging the broader "football family" to unite against him. In a joint letter, they stated that "leadership in football is not a possession. It is not about retaining – or demanding – power for oneself."

The confederations further argued that "When trust is broken through deceit, when an individual places themselves above the collective that entrusted them with authority, that duty has been abandoned." Infantino and Trump have maintained a public rapport, with Infantino presenting Trump with the FIFA 'Peace Prize' in December of the previous year.
