Trump calls alleged Iran Strait of Hormuz attacks a 'stupid violation' of truce

The United States accused Iran of launching at least four drone attacks against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, with one strike hitting the bridge of a large cargo ship. President Donald Trump denounced the actions as a "stupid violation" of the ceasefire agreement between the two nations.

"Damage was caused, but the ship was able to continue on its way. We shot down three other drones. Obviously, this is a stupid violation of our ceasefire agreement," Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social.

According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a cargo ship reported hitting an object on its starboard side, damaging its bridge. Fortunately, no injuries or negative environmental impacts were reported. The U.S. has not yet indicated whether it will issue an official response to the incident, which occurred on June 25.

This confrontation marks the first such incident since the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at reopening the vital Hormuz maritime route and initiating comprehensive negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.

The attack on the cargo ship prompted the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to temporarily suspend its plan to evacuate approximately 600 ships from the Strait of Hormuz. Al Jazeera reported that this decision followed Iran's request for ships to use only routes approved by the country. Iran now views control of this strategic waterway as a significant bargaining chip in negotiations.
