Trump considers renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself after declaring it under U.S. control

Donald Trump has floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” saying the strategic waterway is now under U.S. control and would become “more popular” than ever.

“Now that we have it under American control, should we change the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the Trump Strait? Just like the United States, it would be ‘more popular’ than ever!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. His message followed a map he published a week earlier that labeled the waterway as “new” U.S. territory.

Trump said on Tuesday that Washington had “almost total control” of the strait. He had also announced in August that U.S. forces had cleared mines from the passage. Iran rejected that claim and said it would not allow ships to pass without its permission. Tehran had reopened the waterway after the signing of an expired peace memorandum, but partially closed it again in mid-July after U.S. airstrikes on southern Iran.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said 17 million barrels of crude moved safely along a route that Washington says it established on the southern side of the strait. The claim came as the United States carried out a second attack on Iranian targets in 48 hours, citing attempts by Tehran to attack commercial shipping and U.S. forces in the region. Iran responded by attacking U.S. military facilities in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq. The exchange marked the first military hostilities between the two sides in a month, while peace talks remained stalled.
