Trump Criticizes South Korea Over Military Protection and Iran Support

Former U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of South Korea, asserting that the country benefits from American military protection without offering sufficient assistance in return. Trump highlighted the presence of 39,000 U.S. troops safeguarding South Korea from threats posed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Speaking at the White House, Trump recounted a conversation with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, where he suggested South Korea could help the U.S. with the Iran situation. "We don't need you to help pay rent. But if you want to, help us out on Iran," Trump recalled telling the South Korean president, who reportedly declined.

Trump expressed bewilderment at South Korea's reluctance to support a "very simple military operation" in Iran, especially while benefiting from U.S. protection. He questioned the fairness of the arrangement, where the U.S. spends billions to protect South Korea and other nations, while South Korea declines to reciprocate or assist in critical security matters.

Further compounding his frustration, Trump noted South Korea's unwillingness to participate in guarding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which the country imports most of its oil. "Then why are we doing this?" Trump asked, emphasizing his desire for a fair partnership. He stated that while he gets along with South Korea, the U.S. cannot continue to protect countries that are not willing to help in return.
