Trump demands Iran pay compensation for conflict victims, countering Tehran's claims

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared he will seek compensation from Iran for individuals harmed in conflicts, a move that counters Iran's own demands for reparations. Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he is demanding Iran pay for "all of the people that they have killed and injured."

This declaration follows Iran's recent assertion that the U.S. must meet its conditions, including compensation and the lifting of sanctions, before strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened. Iran had indicated it was close to an agreement with Oman to delineate new shipping routes through the strait.

Trump specifically referenced the 2000 USS Cole bombing, which killed 17 American sailors and was attributed to al-Qaeda, as a basis for his claim. He also mentioned the thousands of victims' families from recent anti-government protests in Iran, which have been described as the most severe unrest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Human rights groups have accused the Iranian government of suppressing dissent even during wartime.
