Trump envoy Witkoff says US mission in Kyiv and Moscow was to bring sides closer

The US delegation's mission during visits to Kyiv and Moscow was to “bring the sides closer together,” special envoy Steve Witkoff said on September 6.

Witkoff said relationships were critical to resolving wars such as this one. “If you don't have relationships with both sides and you have poor communication, then you probably have very, very little chance of getting to a peaceful resolution,” he told journalists.

He said Ukraine and Russia “have to come to a resolution.” Witkoff added that his role and Jared Kushner's was to bring the parties together, narrow the issues between them and establish effective communication channels. He said he hoped the delegation had begun that process constructively during the previous 48 hours and expressed confidence in a positive resolution.

Kushner said there was no guarantee that the war would end by winter, but that the United States was working to create the conditions needed for that outcome. Zelenskyy said Ukraine, the two US envoys and national security advisers from France, Britain and Germany had agreed to meet again in the same format soon.

Zelenskyy also said three rounds of talks had taken place on September 6. He described all of them as “very substantive” and said they focused on possible parameters for ending the war and short-term support for Ukraine.
