Their objective was to consult with a select group of technical experts who could be crucial in complex nuclear negotiations with Iran, according to Axios.

The White House is actively pursuing a memorandum of understanding with Tehran to de-escalate tensions and pave the way for substantive talks on Iran's nuclear program. While public rhetoric continues, the administration wants a specialist team ready for immediate action should an agreement be reached. However, diplomatic and regional sources indicate that significant disagreements persist between Washington and Tehran, making the success of these talks highly uncertain.

An anonymous U.S. official stated, "This meeting at Oak Ridge does not guarantee an agreement. But it shows that negotiations have entered a very serious phase, the chances are real, and we want to be prepared." The choice of Oak Ridge is strategic, as the National Laboratory and the Y-12 National Security Complex house top American experts in uranium enrichment and reprocessing technologies. Historically, sensitive nuclear materials and equipment from Libya and Kazakhstan have been handled secretly in Tennessee.

Washington has assembled a crisis team of approximately 100 experts for this issue. Some were involved in recovering enriched uranium from Venezuela last month, while others accompanied Kushner and Witkoff on initial exploratory talks in Oman before the recent conflict erupted.

Negotiations have stalled over recent weeks. Trump's envoys had outlined a 60-day memorandum of understanding with Iranian representatives, which included maintaining a ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, permitting Iranian oil exports, and initiating discussions on enriched uranium stockpiles and future purification activities.
