Trump gives Iran 'last chance' for talks, again

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again issued an ultimatum to Iran, stating that the two nations are in negotiations, a desire he attributes to Tehran.

Trump claimed that various countries had asked the U.S. to give diplomacy another chance. However, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that the country was only informed of bilateral negotiations, which Iran is conducting with Oman, not the U.S.

Historically, Trump's threats have been followed by announcements that Iran had agreed to talks, with the U.S. claiming the upper hand. When Iran did not meet Trump's demands, he would again lash out at Tehran.

This time, Trump had announced new talks for Monday, stating he had postponed the largest U.S. military attack since World War II to allow for these negotiations. He indicated that the talks would concern the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for international gas and oil trade, aiming for its complete opening by Tuesday. A second phase, according to Trump, would focus on Iran's denuclearization.

Following this, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson initially reported only bilateral talks with Oman regarding a joint preliminary shipping corridor in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump accused Iran of dishonesty on his Truth Social platform. In the White House, he reiterated that any solution regarding the Strait of Hormuz must not involve Iran levying fees.
