Former U.S. President Donald Trump has thrown his full support behind Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, describing him as a "smart, strong, and tough leader" who fights for his country. Trump expressed confidence that De la Espriella, if elected president, would drive economic growth, create jobs, boost trade, and combat crime and drug trafficking, while restoring "law and order."

Trump emphasized the significance of the upcoming second round of elections for Colombia's future and its bilateral relationship with the United States. He noted that De la Espriella would face a candidate from what Trump terms the "radical left" in the final vote. Trump called it an "honor" to endorse De la Espriella, citing his professional achievements and political support for the U.S. president, and assured that "El Tigre" would not disappoint the Colombian people.

The endorsement comes after Colombia's National Registry confirmed that 99.94% of preliminary vote counts showed De la Espriella as the leading candidate, followed by leftist Iván Cepeda. Both will compete in the second round on June 21. The European Union Electoral Observation Mission (MOE UE) has dismissed claims of data manipulation in the vote count, stating the elections were conducted in an "orderly, transparent, and fluid" manner. Mission head Esteban González Pons confirmed an audit of the preliminary count software was conducted by an international organization and shared with parties prior to the elections.
