Trump: Iran Is ‘Not a Big Issue’ for the United States

Donald Trump said the United States’ confrontation with Iran was “not a big issue” for Washington, even as he described it as a military conflict and warned that the United States could strike near Kazma Mountain.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said many people did not call the situation a war. He said he preferred the term “military conflict” because it was not important to the United States. Trump also argued that American forces had done everything militarily in Iran and had been very successful, while saying the United States was not actively carrying out an attack.

Many people do not call this a war. I call it a military conflict because it is not an important issue for us. Iran is not a big issue for us. We intervened in Venezuela, and we intervened here too.

Trump said 18 U.S. service members had been killed in the clashes with Iran. He dismissed that figure as not particularly large compared with the Vietnam or Afghanistan wars. He also said Washington was closely watching developments in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump also said he would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on Sept. 24. He said he had told Xi, “Please do not get involved in Iran,” and that China had not become deeply involved. Trump said Beijing could have taken a much more active role but had intervened very little in the tensions with Iran.
