Trump jokes he'll blame VP Vance if Iran deal fails

During a press conference at the G7 summit in France, U.S. President Donald Trump playfully threatened to blame Vice President JD Vance should a burgeoning agreement with Iran falter. "If it goes well, I'll take the credit; if it goes badly, I'll blame JD. You better be careful, JD," Trump remarked, responding to a journalist's question about potentially holding Vance accountable for a failed deal.

Trump's lighthearted jab occurred as details of the negotiated text with Iran began to surface. The proposed accord reportedly includes provisions for ending hostilities between the two nations and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Both countries would have a two-month timeframe to finalize a comprehensive agreement concerning Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions.

Vice President Vance had actively advocated for the release of the full text of the agreement reached with the Islamic Republic of Iran, urging mediators from Pakistan and Qatar to allow its publication. Vance is expected to lead the U.S. delegation in Switzerland on Friday for the official signing ceremony, an event President Trump announced he would not attend, planning to return to Washington after a dinner in Versailles.

This potential agreement follows Vance's participation in earlier negotiations with Iran held in Islamabad in April. That round of talks marked the highest-level engagement between the U.S. and Iran in decades but concluded without a resolution. The current memorandum of understanding aims to conclude the conflict that began on February 28, following a U.S.-led offensive that resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
