Trump left Turkey secretly amid Iran threat: reports

An elaborate security operation allowed U.S. President Donald Trump to depart Turkey secretly, evading a credible threat from Iran. The clandestine exit occurred on July 8, but details only emerged more than a month later through reports by The Washington Post and The New York Times.

The operation involved Trump being moved in a catering vehicle and using the Air Force One as a decoy. While the presidential aircraft, carrying journalists and staff, departed Ankara, Trump secretly left Turkish territory on a different military aircraft.

U.S. intelligence services reportedly detected a significant Iranian threat hours before Trump's scheduled departure. This prompted a complete overhaul of the security plan for his return journey. The initial plan was to fly Trump to the United Kingdom on the older Air Force One, but the threat necessitated a change.

Trump boarded the older Air Force One, but exited through a different access point than the journalists. He was discreetly transported across the tarmac in a catering vehicle to a smaller U.S. Air Force C-32A. This aircraft then flew him to Mildenhall, UK, where he secretly re-boarded the older Air Force One before disembarking for the press and continuing to Washington on a new Boeing 747-8.

The scale of the operation underscores the U.S. security services' deep concern over Iranian threats against Trump amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. Publicly, the aircraft changes were attributed to logistical reasons and a desire to showcase the new presidential plane to U.S. military personnel in the UK.
