Trump names Bill Pulte interim National Intelligence Director

President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte, the current director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, as the interim Director of National Intelligence. Trump announced the decision on his Truth Social platform, stating Pulte possesses extensive experience in managing sensitive U.S. affairs, market stability, and overseeing trillions of dollars at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This appointment follows a previous nomination of Aaron Lukas to replace Tulsi Gabbard, who is set to resign. Pulte's selection is not without controversy. In September 2025, he reportedly had a heated verbal exchange, including threats of physical altercations, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a private dinner. Additionally, in his role at the housing agency, Pulte allegedly pressured the Department of Justice to investigate New York Attorney General Letitia James over alleged mortgage application irregularities, a move that caused discomfort among Justice Department officials due to a lack of evidence. To transition from an interim to a permanent role, Pulte must be nominated by Trump and confirmed by the Senate. He is replacing Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned on May 22 and will officially leave her post on June 30 to attend to her husband's battle with bone cancer.
